An independent member of Mayo County Council has called for the development of at least four free bus parking spaces in Claremorris and Ballinrobe to facilitate and encourage passing tourist traffic to stop in the towns.

The members of the Claremorris electoral area committee have given their full backing to a planning application from Davitts GAA club to upgrade its existing facilities including the construction of new serviced dressing rooms and septic tank facilities at Castlemagarret Park New, Ballindine, despite the application being listed to be refused permission by Mayo County Council. The June meeting of the committee was told by John McMyler, senior executive planner for Mayo County Council, that the development was listed for refusal because the development was on a national primary road and the junction onto the N17 was deemed unsafe.

The elected members of Mayo County Council are set to address their concerns over the lack of opportunities for people to obtain planning permission for housing projects in rural areas close to urban centres in the new upcoming review of the current county development plan. At the May meeting of Mayo County Council Independent Cllr Richard Finn tried to have a clause inserted in the new draft Claremorris Local Area Plan to make it easier for people to get planning permission in areas that are under urban pressure.

A public meeting was held in Claremorris last Tuesday night to discuss the granting of planning permission by the Mayo County Council for a biopharma facility and combined heat and power plant, fueled by biomass fuels at Kilbeg, Claremorris. The application had been made by Biopharamed West Ltd and Imperative Energy for the development last February, and the council granted permission for development on March 7 this year, with 39 conditions attached. At the meeting held on Tuesday night a committee was formed and a decision was made by a majority of those in attendance to lodge an objection to the development to An Bord Pleanála.
